The Traditional African Home And The Place Of The African Drum
It is a rare thing to visit a traditional African home and not find a drum. And this is a practice that has existed for generations. As soon as a young man got married and started his own family, they acquired an African drum, and usually more than one. What role does it serve?
It is a symbol. More than anything, it is an honor to the traditions of the African. It is also a musical instrument that fathers use to teach their sons how to play. Many an evening will be spent with father and sons(s), the latter teaching the former the history, the functions and how to play the Djembe drum.
It is also a functional item. It is often used as a stool even in the modern African home, and they are well like because they last for years. They are also used as coffee tables, so that main meals are served on them and then the family can gather around and eat. These kinds are usually much larger than the usual drum and are fashioned with legs like a table.
